landmark case

A court case whose outcome establishes a precedent that either substantially changes the interpretation of the law or establishes new case law on a particular topic. Certain cases within this category are widely known in legal studies and may be studied in law school even in instances where they have been overturned by later decisions. An example of a landmark case is Roe v. Wade.
